The fixing of Lower Fayetteville Road moved a little closer to fruition Tuesday, but the Coweta County Commission sent a message back to the city of Newnan.

The commissioners had asked the city of Newnan to help repave and widened the heavily-travelled road. Newnan officials agreed the road needed to be fixed, but suggested the county work with the city in obtaining a bike path along the road.

"I would suggest the city respond to our request without adding an addendum. The paving and improvement of the road is too important to get hung up on bike paths," said Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter.

The commission instructed county administrator Theron Gay to express their sentiments to Newnan officials. In other news, the commission:

Tabled an agreement with 21st Century Coweta. The relationship between the commission and the economic group has turned frosty in the last few weeks. Commissioner Jim McGuffey had suggested at a recent council meeting the group be put under the jurisdiction of the Coweta County Development Authority and the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce. The commission deferred the proposed contract outlining funding for the group until its April 13 meeting.

Accepted the sheriff's department into the county's personnel management system. Sheriff Mike Yeager suggested the county adopt a policy abolishing the leave of absence clause for political reasons.

Yeager said when he chose to run for sheriff, he left the department knowing that if he lost the race, he would not have a job.

"If a person is serious enough, he should separate himself from the county," Yeager said.

But Hunter said he would not be in favor of it, since it might discourage people from seeking elected office. The commissioners decided to leave the absence policy the same.
