Time to pay the piper

Letters from Our Readers

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

Taxpayers beware. The Fayette County Commissioners have levied the first of what will be a nonstop series of tax increases.

For those of you who have missed it, the commissioners voted what amounts to a 5 percent tax (for those cell phone users whose bills do not exceed $20/month) on cellular phone use. The best part is that the new technology that this tax is paying for only requires a 30-cent tax. These politicians apparently know that if you are going to take the heat for a tax increase you might as well get all you can. You won't be able to come back to that trough too soon.

But wait, we need a new jail. Watch for a SPLOST to cover that item. Wait again, we need Lake MacIntosh, bond issue there. What about the infrastructure that previous commissioners neglected to avoid having to face the wrath of a tax increase. Count on it now.

Lest we forget, The Fayette County Board of Education warned us all, the voters, last year that we needed more buildings, AKA schools, as our newest schools are beyond capacity already. Figure at least $5-10 million every year for the next decade to keep pace with county growth.

Hang onto your wallets folks. It is time to pay the piper.
