Coweta County could see its first charter school in just over a year when the Central Technical School opens its doors. Last year, the General Assembly cleared the path for local school districts to establish charter schools. Coweta County Superintendent of Education Richard Brooks said charter school give local school systems a little more flexibility in establishing curriculum and hiring instructors at the schools. "For instance, if we had somebody who was an electrical engineer, but didn't have a teaching certificate, we could hire him to teach engineering at the technical school," he said. The school system would provide the prospective instructor with staff development on issues such as handling a classroom, the superintendent added. Before Central could become a charter school, the school board would have to approve it. Brooks anticipates the board discussing the issue in the next few months and possibly applying for charter school status at the end of the year. Central Technical is scheduled to open in 2000.
