Soccer nearing end of season

Time is running down in this soccer season, yet it feels as if it just begun. The rankings have changed slightly, the McIntosh Lady Chiefs are ranked first in AAAA and the Fayette County Tigers are ranked fourth. They met last night after the paper had already gone to press. Both teams played on Friday night and both teams won. McIntosh faced Walton County at home, winning 3-1. Julie Herdic scored twice and Micki Stone scored once for McIntosh as they outshot Walton 27-7. Keri Pendergrass, Tabitha Lowey and Ansley Franke each had an assist.

"We gave up a pretty soft goal," said Coach Stephen Buckner. "But we were pretty dominant." As for his thoughts on playing the crosstown rivals, Buckner said "It's a big rivalry but we take them as they come. This game will decide the top two teams in the region. We want to be number one because we want both of our games at home."

As for the other number one team in the county, Starr's Mill took on fifth ranked Woodward academy on Friday and blanked them 6-0. Starr's Mill outshot the War Eagles 19-2. Freshmen Allison Graham and Amanda Thurber had two goals a piece while junior Janet Burke and sophomore Alice Martin each had one. Burke scored off of a pass from Lauren Jones in the opening minute of the game. Woodward's defense regained their composure and held the Lady Panthers scoreless for another 13 minutes. Allison Graham scored soon afterwards on a pass from Kacy Murray. Ten minutes after that Amanda Thurber launched the ball into the upper right hand corner of the net from 18 yards out. Starr's Mill scored one more time before the half with a goal by Alice Martin.

Lauren Jones found Allison Graham in the opening minutes of the second half for her second goal of the game. Amanda Thurber netted the final goal of the game for Starr's Mill with about ten minutes left. Starr's Mill improved their overall record to 10-0, seven of those 10 games have been shutouts. The Lady Panthers have outscored their opponents 91-3 (that is not a typo). Starr's Mill is off until they travel to the Jekyll Island Tournament this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The Fayette County boys hosted Lovejoy on Friday night and beat them 2-0. Fayette County did not appear into the game but they maintained control. The usual veterans did not get the goals and the assists, they went to the rookies on Friday. Andrew Doggendorf and Andy Hannon scored the goals while Todd Edwards and Normer Adams got the assists. Fayette County outshot Lovejoy 14-8 but they did give lovejoy more chances than their other opponents this season. Fayette may have been looking ahead to their game with McIntosh, as the winner will take first in the region and get home field advantage
