The Newnan Lady Cougars faced Lovejoy on Friday
night and defeated them 6-1. The game started slowly but under the
leadership of seniors Anne Barrow and Karen Hembree, the
offense got underway. Hembree scored the first goal, putting the ball
just over the Lovejoy keeper. Barrow nailed the second goal from
about 45 yards out. However, Lovejoy capitalized on a break away
right before halftime, cutting the Newnan lead in half. The
Lady Cougars were more aggressive in the second half.
Sophomore Amanda Morton, who assisted Hembree's goal then assisted
Sister Edge's two goals of the evening. Morton also finished
off a ball played by Marci Pike. The scoring was not over yet,
with five minutes remaining Karen Hembree punched in a loose
ball in front of the net.
Newnan outshot Lovejoy 36 to 3 and continued to get
outstanding play from Erica Crutchfield, Tiffany Sellen, Stephanie
Flagg and Crystal Owens.
Newnan hosted second ranked McIntosh on Tuesday night
and just could not keep up. The Lady Chiefs capitalized anytime
the Lady Cougars let their guard down, beating them by a score
of 9-0. Keeper Katie Smith stopped several point blank shots
while senior Elizabeth McEntire and sophomore Patricia
Ballantyne kept the game close early. Newnan will travel to
Sharpsburg to face East Coweta on Saturday. McIntosh will host Walton
on Friday at 6 p.m.
The Starr's Mill girls handled the Sandy Creek Lady
Patriots with ease on Tuesday, defeating them 15-0. The Lady
Panthers controlled the tempo for most of the game, virtually
slicing through the defense. Ten different people scored for Starr's
Mill, including usual goalie Rachel Sproul. Alison Graham
scored twice in nine minutes, Brady Ragan had two goals and
Janet Burke had a hat trick. The Lady Panthers will host fifth
ranked Woodward Academy at the soccer complex on Hwy.74 at
5:30 p.m. on Friday.
The Fayette County boys traveled to Griffin on Tuesday
night, expecting a physical game. The game lived up to it's
expectations. There were two red cards and five yellow cards issued. The
Tigers were only issued one yellow card. Fayette County led 1-0 at the
half and then went up 2-0 early in the second half. Griffin scored
next but Fayette iced it right at the end with their third goal.
Todd Edwards headed in a Nick Zatezalo throw in and
Trevor Bowman headed in a free kick from Brent Turner. Brent
Turner also scored off of a free kick. Fayette County outshot Griffin
20-9 and JB Wood remained in the net for the entire game,
recording seven saves.
Fayette County will host Lovejoy on Friday night at 7
p.m. and highlights from Tuesday's win will be shown on The
