When the Flint River Council of Boy Scouts of America
holds their annual "Scout About" this Saturday at Atlanta Motor
Speedway, a strangely fascinating form of racing will be taking place.
Sod warriors from over seven states will gather for the STA-BIL
Peach Tree Mow Down, a race for riding lawn mowers.
There will be four different classes and all the blades will
be removed: Stock (10 mph), IMOW (Therefore I am) (25 mph),
Prepared (35 mph), and Factory Experimental (50+ mph). This
race is one of 21 turf battles in the 1999 STA-BIL National
Lawn Mower Racing Series. The public is invited to race, as long
as racers are over 16 years of age. A sense of humor is not
required, but is strongly encouraged.
The event starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Along with the
racing, there will be a 70 foot rapelling station, a NASA Space
Shuttle Replica exhibit, a comedy show, antique military equipment
demonstrations and various Boy Scout exhibits. For more
information, contact the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association
call 847-729-7363 or visit the website at www.letsmow.com This
event is sure to mow you over.
