The McIntosh Lady Chiefs traveled to North Carolina
last weekend in search of some good competition. On Friday
night, McIntosh defeated Southwest Guilford 4-0. Keri
Pendergrass scored three times for the Lady Chiefs and Julie Herdic added
a goal. Coach Buckner was impressed with the level of play
of his team. "The game was very physical and we continued to
play well. The goals were just incredible." Southwest Guilford
was ranked third in AAA girl's soccer in North Carolina.
On Saturday, McIntosh faced the number two team in the
country, Greensboro Day School. McIntosh struck first with a
goal by Keri Pendergrass in the first five minutes, but she pulled
a muscle while scoring the goal and left the game. McIntosh
kept outplaying Greensboro Day for another five minutes, hitting
the post with several shots. Greensboro Day scored the next
two goals, leading 2-1 with a few minutes left in the first half.
McIntosh had several more opportunities in front of the Greensboro
net but when they couldn't capitalize, Greensboro Day scored
another goal.
"We were just flat," Coach Buckner said. "Keri not
playing hurt us because she and Julie (Herdic) work so well
together, that losing one of them is like losing both of them." The
second half was back and forth between the two teams. Greensboro
Day hit two goals in the last ten minutes, when McIntosh made
it's final push for goals. McIntosh lost by a score of 5-1.
The Lady Chiefs were also missing Micki Stone, a
mid-fielder who was injured in the SW Guilford game, and senior
keeper Karen Varisco. None of the injuries should keep the girls out
very long. The Lady Chiefs hosted Stockbridge last night and
will travel to Griffin on Friday evening.
