Fayetteville City Council told staff to strike from proposed new zoning laws a proposed ban on parking in yards.

Council will consider the wide-ranging amendments to its zoning ordinances tomorrow at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

The proposed changes include a new section covering bed and breakfast operations, plus a new corridor ordinance designed to improve the aesthetic look of major thoroughfares.

During last week's work session, council decided a ban on parking in yards would be too much government.

A provision prohibiting parking overnight on the street was changed. Council will consider citing on-street parking only after more than two consecutive nights.

Mayor Mike Wheat said weekend visitors sometimes have to park on the street, especially if a family already has several cars. "I'd rather not pass an ordinance that I know I'm going to be in violation of very shortly," he said.

You'll still be able to park your company pickup truck at home overnight, but if council approves the new ordinances, you won't be able to park very large trucks. The group decided to put a weight limit on vehicles parked at home, rather than prohibiting all commercial vehicles with six wheels or more.

The proposed changes also include higher fees for staff review of rezoning, site plan and development plan applications.
