Pollution risk coming to PTC industrial park?

Letters from Our Readers

When Georgia-Pacific announced that they were closing their resins facility, many people sighed in relief. This facility had some very dangerous chemicals on-site in large quantities.

The plant had a great safety record, but I agree with John Boothby, executive director of the Fayette County Development Authority, when he said, "We'd love to have them back but we'd rather have a regional headquarters than a plant like that" (AJC, Sept. 17, 1998).

Unfortunately, we might be getting another hazardous plant at that same location. Universal Refining, LLC, is going before the Peachtree City Planning Commission on Monday, March 8. I know nothing about this company other than they will be recycling used oil on the site. I also do not know how much oil they keep on-site at one time, which is an important factor.

Would it not be nice if the city or the Board of Health conducted a health risk and environmental impact assessment prior to approving any plans and providing any permits?

I believe there is a legal means of getting this done. If you agree, please write the City Council with your thoughts. We need to do whatever is possible to reduce the risks of a disaster in Peachtree City.
