The search for a new Fayette County School superintendent to replace the retiring Dr. Dave Brotherton has reached the interview stage and according to School Board Chairman Debbie Condon, the new superintendent may be named as early as next week. A called board meeting was held Wednesday to "deal with lots of issues" related to the hiring process, Condon said. "So many pieces of the puzzle have to fit," she said. Attending the closed session were the board members, school board attorney, the "main candidate," and representatives from the candidate search firm engaged to assist the board in screening applications. Interviews were conducted Friday at the Wyndham Conference Center in Peachtree City. While Condon did not disclose how many hopefuls for the job were interviewed, it is customary to select the top five applicants. She said there were 21 applicants for the school district's top job. Condon indicated that their main candidate would be "stepping down" from their current position if selected. Longtime observers of the board have speculated that McIntosh High School Principal Stuart Bennett might be a prime pick, although it's anybody's guess at this time who will be hired.
