Fayette County Sheriff's deputies arrested a suspected church burglar early Tuesday morning near Ga. Highway 85 and Bernard Road, reports show.

Calvin Eugene Smith, 36, of Decatur, had apparently parked his car on Bernard Road and left it, according to Lt. Mahlon Donald of the Criminal Investigation Division. Officers stopped Smith when he returned to the vehicle, and their investigation led to burglary charges in connection with a recent break-in at Grace Baptist Church on Hwy. 85 south, Donald said. The suspect also was charged with prowling, driving on a suspended license, and possession of tools for the commission of a crime, he added.

Officers also caught Johnny Lewis Campbell, 39, of Phenix City, Ala., and charged him with failure to maintain lane, financial transaction card theft and as a habitual violator, Donald noted. The car Campbell was driving was reported stolen in Alabama, where car theft charges will be pursued, according to Donald. The investigator also said that the Sheriff's Department has learned that Campbell is wanted in Columbus, Ga., on two counts of armed robbery.
