Lady Cougars stomp Stockbridge
The Newnan Lady Cougars opened their 1999 4-AAAA
Region schedule by thrashing Stockbridge 10-0 at Drake
Stadium last Friday evening. As with their season opener last
Tuesday, the Lady Cougars started slowly. They did eventually build a
5-0 lead at the half. Newnan opened the second half by scoring a
barrage of five goals in 15 minutes. Scoring for the Lady Cougars
were sophomore Amanda Morton (four goals and four assists),
senior Karen Hembree (three goals and two assists), freshman Sister
Edge (two goals and two assists) and senior captain Anne Barrow
(one goal and an assist). Newnan had little to do defensively but
managed to hold Stockbridge to no shots and only one corner
kick. Seniors Crystal Owens and Summer Carter were prominent in
continually thwarting any small chances Stockbridge create ,
making it an easy shutout for keeper Katie Smith.
Karen Rainey was again unavailable due to injury
while Stephanie Flagg, Tiffany Sellen, Jessica Moore, and Iliana
Chacon each saw action in the match. Chacon sustained an injury in
the second half but it is thought to be relatively minor. Newnan
hosted Redan last night and results were not available before the paper
went to press.
