Peachtree City residents may be surprised to learn what winds up in sewer lines, says Larry Turner, manager of the city's Water and Sewer Authority.

Turner says he plans to make a brief presentation Monday on the kinds of things that the city's sewer-cleaning firm is finding: "Baseball bats, bricks, asphalt, concrete, gravel ... you'd be amazed how sometimes kids will take a manhole cover off and throw things into the sewerage system."

WASA recently hired Cross and Sons Inc. of Douglasville to clean and videotape about 19,000 feet of sewer lines in several areas of the city. The work has been under way for about two weeks, Turner says.

The report is set for the regular WASA meeting Monday, March 1, at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The authority also is expected to consider a surplus property declaration, bid awards for vehicle purchases, and a budget amendment to hire an additional wastewater treatment plant operator.

Turner also notes that a public hearing called by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) is set for March 16 at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The EPD wants to hear from the public about sewage spills that happened last year and the measures that have been put in place to prevent further spills, Turner says.
