The Starr's Mill Lady Panther soccer team got their season
off to an excellent start by defeating Parkview 4-1 on
Saturday. Both teams finished in second place in their divisions last
year, AAA for Starr's Mill and AAAA for Parkview.
Parkview got the first goal of the match in the 33rd minute of
the game but Janet Burke tied the game thirteen minutes later. Starr's
Mill out shot Parkview 12-3 in the first half. In the second half, Alice
Martin hit Burke with a pass as she ran towards the net. Burke slipped
the ball past the charging Parkview goalie for her second goal of
the match. Kacy Murray scored for the Panthers off of a free kick and
Alice Martin scored two minutes later. Starr's Mill out shot
Parkview again in the second half, 7-2.
The Panthers hope to be even stronger than last year's 17-3
state runner-up squad. Starr's Mill added five freshmen to their
team of seven juniors and three sophomores that lettered last year.
The entire team returns next season as well. The Panthers face Marist
on Saturday at home at 6 p.m.
