Coweta and Meriwether counties may soon have a new industrial park that could bring 30,000 support jobs to the area.

In a meeting Monday night of the Coweta, Fayette and Meriwether Joint Development Authority, the leaders asked for a $38,000 feasibility study to be conducted on the project.

If built, the park would be located just off Interstate 85 at exit 7 between U.S. Highway 29 and alternate U.S, Highway 27 at a site in both counties.

The feasibility study will first have to be approved by both county's board of commissioners, but preliminary estimates by Georgia Power indicate the park could have a huge impact on both counties.

The power company estimated that between $500 million-$1 billion could be added to the tax digest in both counties. In addition to the nearly 30,000 jobs the project could bring up to 10,000 new manufacturing jobs to the area.

The park would generate between $100 million-$300 million in annual retail sales and spawn up to $6 million in new sales tax revenue.

For their part, Coweta officials said the project offers a golden opportunity for additional industrial development in the county. The property is affordable and offers easy access to the interstate and Hartsfield International Airport.

Meriwether officials currently have no county park and believe the park could be a big boost to its economy.

The Coweta County Board of Commissioners approved funding for their part of the feasibility study at its Tuesday meeting, while Meriwether officials are expected to vote on the study next Wednesday.
