Take measures to prepare for severe weather

Next week is "Severe Weather Awareness Week," says Capt. Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

"Fayette County is not immune to tornadoes and other types of severe weather," Nelms said. "The time to prepare for these inevitable events is now." On Feb. 22, "Family Protection Day," make a point of educating your family about what to do when storms occur. Having a plan in place could mean a life-and-death difference, Nelms added.

A NOAA Weather Radio is a good way to stay informed about changing weather conditions, Nelms said. The radios can be set to alert you 24 hours a day, broadcasting watches and warnings for your area as soon as they are issued by the National Weather Service.
