The Fayette County Science Fair Awards were issued recently to middle and high school students competing at a county-wide level. Overall awards for the middle school division included: First Place, Food Spoilage-Pearry Difference by Kiran Valiani, Rising Starr; Second Place, Pollution Puzzle by Bill Boyett, Fred Gibson and Elliott McCaskill, Rising Starr; Third Place, How Does the Temperature Affect the Viscosity of Oil?, by Shirley Li, J.C. Booth; Fourth Place, How Surface Affects Acceleration, Tori Fratto, J.C. Booth. Overall awards in the high school division included First Place, Use of Periwinkles to Investigate Yellow Aster Phytoplasm by Sammy Chang, Starr's Mill; Second Place, Does a Subterranean Termite Patriarch Leak Mitochondria DNA to Progeny?, by Diana Chang, Fayette County; Third Place, How Cell Structure Affects a Bacteria's Response to Hot Water by Tony Hung, McIntosh; and Fourth Place, Does Orange Juice Lose Vitamin C Over Time?, by Kevin Erickson, Sandy Creek. Winners in the Fayette Clean and Beautiful Category included: Wetlands Water Analysis by Robert Huefner, Michael Condon and Ben Lorber, J.C. Booth Middle; Will Swamp Mud, Gravel or Sand Work Best to Filter Dirty Water?, by Robyn Schultz, Rising Starr Middle. The Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association Award went to How Surface Affects Acceleration by Tori Fratto, J.C. Booth. Students advancing with their projects to the regional competition include Jordan Worrall and Michelle Ellenburg of J.C. Booth Middle School with How Clean is Clean; Tori Fratto and Shirley Li, both from J.C. Booth; Bill Boyett, Fred Gibson and Elliott McCaskill of Rising Starr; Kran Valiani, Rising Starr, Kevin Erickson, Sandy Creek; Tony Hung, McIntosh, Diana Chang, Fayette County; Sammy Chang, Starr's Mill; Monitoring Hydroponics and Nutrient Deficiencies by Lynn Belshause, Fayette County; Does Rap or Classical Add Up?, by John Barson, Daniel Berschinski and Joey McCoy, McIntosh; RMS Titanic, Kathryn Bradshaw, McIntosh; Does the Organism That Causes TB Have Known DNA Plasmid?, by Jessica King, Fayette County; and Balls of Steel, Lance Dutton, Fayette County. |
