The Clayton College and State University women's
basketball team set or tied four different records in a 68-61 win over
USC-Spartanburg on Saturday night. Sophomore Misty Amerson
finished with a school record 10 steals to increase her season
total to 67, breaking the previous record of 59 set by Candi
Wyatt during the 1993-94 season. Freshman Sarah Ernest of
Fayetteville nailed three three-pointers to tie the single season record of
45, while the Lady Lakers as a team connected on 9 of 21 from
beyond the arc to increase their season total to 133, another record.
The Lady Lakers trailed 52-45 with just under seven minutes
to go, when Sarah Ernest hit two three-pointers to jump start a
12-0 run. Misty Amerson finished with 15 points and eight
assists, while junior Mandy Cowan scored 11 points and grabbed
10 rebounds. It was her fourth double-double of the season.
The men's team was handed a win over USC Spartanburg
on Saturday. The Lakers connected on 27 of 30 free throws in the
second half, including 17 of 18 in the final 3:08, en route to a
84-71 comeback win. Leading 67-60, Clayton State took advantage
of three USCS technical fouls in a span of 22 seconds and
drained seven straight free throws to take a commanding 14 point lead
with just under three minutes to go. It was the Lakers 15th win of
the season, their most since the 1994-95 season.
Seniors Mike Ruth and Robert Conley scored 21 and 20
points respectively, while freshman Charlie Frazier Jr, added
17 points. Clayton State travels to Savannah on Tuesday to
face Armstrong Atlantic State University in a PBAC
doubleheader, their final game of the regular season.
