Incoming chairman of the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce, Michael Whiteside officially marked the beginning of the new year for the chamber by addressing the group at its annual meeting late last month.

"As I glanced at the back of my program this evening and noted the names of my distinguished predecessors, I was reminded of just how far we've come since 1967 when the chamber was still in its infancy and beginning to establish itself as the 'voice of business' for Fayette County," said Whiteside.

"Our presence here tonight speaks volumes to all of their accomplishments. From our largest member, Delta Air Lines, to our home-based businesses, I am reminded constantly of our volunteer support and the dedication of so many individuals who unselfishly give of their time and talents to advocate and promote our chamber and support our local business community," he added.

Among the areas he mentioned the Chamber as becoming a pro-active partner in during the coming year:

  • Transportation and clean air. The chamber plans to enlist other metro south chambers to become a part of the necessary regional transportation planning.
  • Education. The chamber pledged to continue support of the "Business Partners in Education" program, a chamber project; and a Technical Training Center. The new chairman commented that a well-trained work force could only benefit the county.

Whiteside is the General Manager of Coweta-Fayette EMC and serves as the 33rd chamber chairman.
