New Hope Baptist Church improved to 5-1 with a win
over Braelinn, 76-70. Kerry Evert hit all 10 of his free throws for
New Hope in their battle for first place in the 'A' division of
church league basketball. Jeremiah Johnson of New Hope led
all scorers with 23 points while Cory Eubanks led Braelinn with 18.
Prince of Peace took advantage of the absence of
First Methodist's leading scorer, Matt Drummond, on Friday night,
winning by a score of 55-34. Jerry Barman of Prince of Peace led
all scorers with 14 points. Chuck Grayson of First Methodist
finished with nine points. First Methodist fell to 3-3 while
Prince of Peace improved to 2-4.
First Baptist and Southern Crescent went to overtime
with First Baptist winning by a score of 50-46. Southern
Crescent's lack of depth proved fatal, despite Rob Brown's game-high 22
point effort. Ronnie Chance led First Baptist with 15 points.
New Hope has a strong grip on first place but all six teams are
in the running to qualify for the districts. Prince of Peace has
won two games in a row, while First Methodist have lost their
last three games in a row.
In the 'B' Division, Flat Creek faced Woolsey on Monday
night and was able to hold on for a 49-41 win. Steve Hazelton had
a game high 14 points for Woolsey while Bart Hopper led Flat
Creek with 11 points.
Braelinn kept their game against Kenwood close,
due mostly to Mark Smith's 14 point effort and key three-pointers
from Lance McMillion and John Longsdorf. Kenwood got
14 points from Tim Bell and 13 from Marc Motes, but went 8 for
25 from the free throw line. Braelinn fell short and lost by a score
of 42-36.
Providence scored a paltry 13 points in the first half of
their game against Trinity. The second half was a different story
as Providence's Kirk Williamson hit four three-pointers on his way
to a game high 16 points. Trinity's Scott Marhefka hit three
three-pointers to help his team pull away and win by a score of
59-43. Trinity leads the league in scoring with 57.3 ppg.
