Officers jealous of PTC teens?

Letters from Our Readers

I applaud the recent letter written by one of your readers, Bill Ezpeleta, referencing Peachtree City teens being harassed by their hometown men in blue, the Peachtree City Police department.

On several occasions during the past few months, my 17-year-old son, a junior at McIntosh High School, has been "stalked" by several Peachtree City patrol officers upon leaving our subdivision to perform such dangerous acts as picking up his younger sister after junior high basketball practice or dropping off clothes at the local cleaners.

The officers, who are typically only a few years older than their teenage prey, appear to be overly sensitive to young faces behind the wheels of Mustangs, Probes, and other "teen type" cars; this combination apparently sets them off, providing enough incentive to follow young drivers for miles at a time, just praying for anything resembling a driving infraction.

While many of the parents in our town happen to be well-paid professionals whose children drive decent automobiles, does this grant license to our local police to constantly harass these kids on the road?

Are these young police officers jealous of these mostly good, hard working, college bound kids? I sometimes wonder.

Perhaps our local patrol officers should consider changing their standard logo from "to serve and protect" to "harass and intimidate." It sure would seem to be a better fit, especially if you're a teen living in Peachtree City.
