A single-car accident Sunday night Jan. 31 claimed the life of a Fayetteville man, according to reports from the Fayette County Sheriff's Department's traffic division.

Reports show that Guy Ronald Holcomb was traveling alone in a 1996 Lexus, southbound on Sandy Creek Road just north of Ga. Highway 54, when he ran off the roadway onto the right shoulder, then crossed back over the road and struck a tree. The car then spun around and hit another tree with the rear of the car, according to Maj. Wayne Hannah.

Hannah said Holcomb apparently was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown around inside the car, sustaining head trauma and lacerations. First transported to Fayette Community Hospital, Holcomb was transferred to Southern Regional Hospital, where he died early Tuesday, reports note.

Holcomb's death is the second traffic fatality this year in unincorporated Fayette County. Hannah said that as standard procedure for fatal crashes, the driver's blood will be analyzed by the Georgia State Crime Lab. Alcohol is a suspected factor in the accident, he added.
