New attendance lines up for grabs

Parents who are curious about where their children will be going to school next year should plan to be at Tuesday's Coweta County Board of Education meeting.

Operations Director Doug Bennett said the system has received numerous suggestions about the county's proposed new elementary and middle school attendance lines and plans to unveil the new boundaries Tuesday night.

The system is drawing new lines to accommodate the systems' two new schools, Smokey Road Middle School and Arbor Springs Elementary, that will open in the fall.

In two meetings this week, Bennett praised the comments by parents and said the school system's original maps will have to be tweaked a little to handle some of the parents' concerns. The biggest change is that school officials will now go ahead and adjust the boundary for the new high school.

Bennett said the original plan was to leave the high school lines intact, but it was discovered that in adjusting the middle school lines to a feeder-type plan, nearly 600 students would be moved.

"It's a lot easier to move high school lines and allow for transportation plans since many high school students already drive themselves to school," he said.

The new middle school lines, dubbed Plan C by Bennett, create a feeder plan to the high schools from the county's five middle schools. Students at O.P. Evans and Smokey Road will attend Newnan High School, while students at Arnall and East Coweta Middle will attend East Coweta High School. Students at Madras will attend Northgate High School.

Set for release to the board Tuesday, the proposal will still be available for public comment for 30 days before the board sets the lines, Bennett emphasized.

"We're not rushing it through. We want everybody to have time to look at these proposals," he added.
