Clayton State hosted Lander University on Saturday and,
despite some amazing performances, lost both games. The Lady
Lakers trailed Lander by seven points at the half and then allowed the
Senators to open the second half with a 24-7 run. The Senators held a
commanding 69-44 lead with 12 minutes remaining and never
looked back, winning by a score of 88-74.
One bright spot for the Lady Lakers was junior Mandy
Cowan's 34 points, a new school record. Cowan also pulled down 14
rebounds. She is averaging a team high 16.5 points a game this
season and recorded her third double-double of the season on Saturday.
The Clayton State men overcame a 20 -point deficit in the second
half against Lander University, only to lose in the last second of the
game, 65-64. The Lakers went on a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter and held
a two -point lead with a minute left in the game. They worked the
clock down but could not convert, leaving Lander wide open for the
three pointer that handed the Lakers their eighth loss of the season.
Freshman Charlie Frazier Jr. led the team with 15 points. The
Lakers will travel to Kennesaw State for an exciting doubleheader
on Wednesday.
