The Starr's Mill freshman basketball team is undefeated.
Their current record is 9-0 and their wins have come against local
rivals Fayette County, McIntosh and Sandy Creek as well as
several other regional teams. The team is 15 members deep
and most of the players played at either Booth, Whitewater or
Rising Star last year. Coach Todd Little thinks the team's success
stems from his players' excellent teamwork as well as their
experience. "There are no superstars on this team, but the team effort is
outstanding," Little says. "They are completely consistent. There is
no difference in the level of play when we put in someone from
the bench."
The goal of the Panthers isn't to run up the score on their
opponents, it just happens as they accomplish other team goals.
"For instance," says Coach Little,
"we would try to get everyone on the team to score or we would try
to get double figure rebounds and assists. In the process of
accomplishing these goals we're beating all of our opponents by
double figures."
The freshmen Panthers entered a tournament at Eagle's
Landing this past weekend. They will play at Sandy Creek next Friday
and then return for the final part of the Eagle's Landing
Tournament. They have captured the attention of many, and Coach Little
could not be more proud of his team.
In other freshmen basketball news, the Chiefs defeated
Fayette County in a hard -fought, low- scoring battle last Tuesday,
30-26. the Chiefs fell behind by eight points after the first quarter
but caught fire in the second and led at the half by a score of
19-16. The McIntosh defense was outstanding in the second half,
holding the Tigers to only 10 points in the entire second half.
Scott Prahl led the Chiefs in scoring with 10 points, while Billy
Secor scored seven points and Drew Hartley added six. The
freshmen Chiefs have three games remaining in the regular 1998/99
schedule.
