McIntosh has needs as pressing as Starr's Mill

Letters from Our Readers

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

I am writing in response to Doug Sebastian's statements that there were errors in my last letter.

Mr. Sebastian, if you were correct about Starr's Mill and McIntosh having the same amount of locker rooms and lockers, then wouldn't that indicate that McIntosh has needs just as critical as Starr's Mill?

But I noticed that you apparently don't count the trailers supplied for Starr's Mill athletic use. We don't have those at McIntosh.

The McIntosh varsity football lockers (the ones large enough to hold a helmet and shoulder pads) were supplied by the old Athletic Booster Club, by the way.

And you left out the area built for your wrestling team's use, which your school has chosen not to use. Now it may or may not have been a good choice to move your wrestling program to the cafeteria so that all of your high school and middle school squads could practice together, but it was, nevertheless, a choice made by your school. And if it was the correct choice to turn your wrestling room over to the dance squad, then we need a dance studio for McIntosh too.

And as far as weight rooms, not only is yours far larger and better than ours, think of the students at Sandy Creek, where their weight room is actually a hallway. Now, is that fair?

As far as your athletes not having a proper place to run, do you not have an indoor track at Starr's Mill? We don't have one at McIntosh.

What about basketball Mr. Sebastian? McIntosh has six teams scheduling practice on one court. Starr's Mill has two courts. Is that fair?

And did you know that the county verified the temperature inside our gym as 29 degrees during school the week before Christmas? Is that healthy?

When it comes to soccer fields, I understand the need for school fields, but I believe that the Peachtree City complex you use is superior to any of the school facilities.

When it comes to technology, every available dollar at McIntosh has been spent on that purpose, but the bottom line is that Starr's Mill has been given much, much more. Should providing equal academic training facilities and equipment not be just as important, if not more so, than providing for athletic needs?

You ask how parents would feel if their children were sent to the new complex without proper outdoor facilities. That is certainly a valid point. But I would like to ask you, how would you feel if your child were being sent to a school whose facilities are inferior in every way to the new school?

This is our eighteenth year. How much longer must we wait? Sandy Creek is in their eighth year (as memory serves). How much longer must they wait?

I think we all agree that the new complex needs and deserves a stadium. But I think that you will also have to agree that McIntosh has needs just as critical and of much longer duration than Starr's Mill.

And I think it would be irresponsible of the board to approve a stadium of much higher quality than that supplied at the other schools, unless the plan is to redo the others in a timely manner.

We do not expect Starr's Mill to be deprived of anything supplied to the other schools.

We do expect equal facilities at all of our schools.
