Catching up with the wrestling teams

Starr's Mill participated in the Northwest Metro Invitational this past weekend and took sixth place. The Panthers had seven placers in the tournament. Gary James took second place at 103 while Chris Coleman finished in second place at 145. Matt Fuhrman and Clint Barbour each took third in their weight groups, 152 and 215 respectively. Ariston Bowers took fourth at 135 and Brian Kyser took fifth at 130.

The Panthers travel to Fayette County on Friday to face the Tigers and the Sandy Creek Patriots. On Saturday, Starr's Mill hosts the Panther Duals. The matches begin at 10 a.m.

Fayette County hosted the Fayette County Duals last weekend and won it all. Lithia Springs finished in second place and Heritage took third place in the meet. Four Tiger wrestlers went undefeated on Saturday; Brandon Phillips at 119, Jared Bailey at 130, Nick Salters at 145 and Craig Barron at 171. This was the second year in a row that Fayette County hosted the duals and it was the second year in a row that the Tigers have won the meet.

Fayette County faced Eagle's Landing, Mt. Zion and Newnan on Tuesday. The Tigers beat Newnan by a score of 57-30 and then lost to Eagle's Landing, 59-16 and to Mt. Zion, 42-28. "We had been fortunate earlier this season in keeping people healthy," Coach Bailey said. "It caught up with us now though. We've got three wrestlers out due to grades and one out for the season due to illness. If Fayette County had had their entire team they most likely would have won all three matches on Tuesday. The Tigers will host Pike County and Starr's Mill on Friday and then will travel to Pope on Saturday.

McIntosh went to the Hardaway Invitational last Saturday for their last tournament of the regular season. The Chiefs took second place with an overall score of 213. Josh Rickards, Jonathan Niebes and Eddie Smith were all champions in their weight divisions, while Daniel Graham, Lucas Smith and Matt Waters each finished in second place. Carlos Dinkins finished in third place at 103 The Chiefs travel to Marietta this weekend.
