Heated rivalries abound on Tuesday

Tuesday night was a night of big basketball rivalries. It was the second time that teams had faced each other this season and things have changed since they last met. For instance, the last time that McIntosh and Fayette County met, the Lady Tigers won by two points and the Chiefs edged out the Tigers in the last second by a point. It was a bit of a different story on Tuesday.

The Lady Chiefs opened with a lot of pressure and led the entire way. Kelli Hogan led the offense, getting help from Jessi Prahl who dominated the boards for the Lady Chiefs. Abby Snauwaert of the Lady Tigers and Tani Gaan of the Lady Chiefs exchanged two three pointers a piece in the first half and McIntosh went into halftime with a 35-23 lead. Fayette County cut into the lead in the second half but McIntosh kept pushing the score back up. McIntosh slowed the game down at the end and ate some clock, winning by a score of 57-46.

The McIntosh boys team was not going to let the Tigers lead the entire way, like they did the last time these two teams met. Not on their home court, anyway. McIntosh came out red hot and built an 18-6 lead in the first quarter. Ryan Bobbitt, coming off of a 24 point performance the other night against Lovejoy, hit three three pointers in the first half. McIntosh led 34-19 at halftime. It was more of the same in the second half, with Jones getting into the three point act for the Chiefs. He hit two and Bobbitt hit another one. The game ended with McIntosh winning by a score of 70-47.

The rivals East Coweta and Newnan squared off in Newnan's gym on Tuesday. Everyone for the East Coweta team contributed by playing well in the Lady Indians 88-40 win over Newnan. Janine Martin finished with 19 points and Trishica Evans finished with 10 points. "It was all just clicking," said Coach Paula Jones.

The boys played a much closer game with Newnan. The Indians trailed by 10 points at halftime. East Coweta would shave the lead down only to have Newnan push it back up with some key three pointers. The Indians cut the lead to four points with three minutes left in the game and J.D. Stephens hit a three pointer with two minutes left to tie the game. Brian Robinson of East Coweta hit another three pointer and the Indians hung on within the last minute to win by a score of 70-68. Jackie Britt finished with 28 points while J.D. Stephens finished with 15 points. "If you didn't like that game, you just don't like basketball" said Coach John Thrower. East Coweta hosts LaGrange on Friday night.
