Fayette County Youth Track
registration off and running

The Fayette County Youth Track Team needs and wants your help. The team is scheduled to begin its 1999 season on Tuesday, Feb. 23 from 6 -7 p.m. at the track at McCurry field on 54E and McDonough Rd. in Fayetteville. Right now there is one head coach and one assistant coach but the team needs more support. The team lost half of its members last year and is in the process of trying to rebuild itself.

Assistant coaches for conditioning, sprints and distance, Head/Asst. field coaches, timers, judges and parents interested in fund-raising/concessions and local business sponsorship are needed. Also, an eight lane timer is desperately needed.

The Fayette County Youth Track team is for youngsters ages 7-14 (as of Dec. 31, 1999) who are not currently involved in a middle school or high school track program. Practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7 p.m. There will be meets in Fayetteville, Clayton County, Peachtree City, LaGrange and, possibly, within the Metro-Atlanta area. The first meet is scheduled for March 13 at 10 a.m. The fourth district meet is tentatively scheduled for Apr. 23-24 and the state meet is Apr. 30-May 1 in Augusta. Boys and girls in age divisions eight and under through 14 and under can compete in 14 different events: 50-meter dash, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, 800-meter run, 1600-meter run, standing long jump, running long jump, high jump, 4x100 meter relay, shot put, 4x400 meter relay and the softball throw.

If you can help with any of these events or if you would like to learn more about this youth track program, the opportunities for community service through it or if your organization would like to become a sponsor of the Fayette County Youth Track Program, please contact Danielle Mathis at 770-719-4664. Coach Mathis also plans to bring youth track clinics to the Fayetteville area and she will need assistance with the planning of these clinics. Former Olympians will be in attendance at these clinics.

Registration will begin on Monday Jan. 25 for the youth track program sponsored by the Peachtree City Recreation Department. Children between 7 to 14 years of age (as of Dec. 31, 1999) are eligible to participate. Thne program is open to all Fayette County residents. You may register at either , the Peachtree City Recreation Administration Building , 191 McIntosh Trail, Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or at the Kedron Field House and Aquatic Center, 202 Kedron Drive, Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Registration is only open for two weeks and will end on Saturday, Feb. 6

The cost will be $50.00 per child with a discount for siblings within the same family. This includes a team uniform and entry fees for meets.

There will be an organizational meeting held on Sunday, Feb. 7 starting at 7 p.m. at the J.C. Booth Middle School Gym, 250 Peachtree Parkway South. It is very important for all parents and athletes to attend.

Practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. starting on Tuesday, Feb. 9. Practices will be held at J.C. Booth Middle School with some scheduled at Sandy Creek High School, 360 Jenkins Road. These exceptions will be announced in advance.

Meets will be held on Saturdays beginning Mar. 6. These wil be in the Atlanta Metro Area, Fayetteville and Peachtree City. As soon as it's completed, a meet schedule will be published.

The dates for the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District and State meets have already been announced. They are Apr.23 and 24 and May 7 and 8respectively.

Events offered will be 50,100,200 and 400 meter dashes;800 and 1,600 meter runs; standing and running long and high jumps; shotput, softball throw; 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. Coaches for this program are Bill Anderson and David Leonard.
