Life began at the church in September 1880 as a small congregation midway on Corinth Road, which stretches between Ga Highway 85 north and Ga. Highway 54 east. The first preacher was a black man known as Uncle Berry Austin. The original building was constructed with lumber from the Bottoms family and even when their sawmill failed in 1882, hands that had already been hired finished the construction. Bobbie Bottoms graciously donated leftover lumber from the failed sawmill to the cause. Another family instrumental in its early days were the Ellis'. Tom Bottoms wife, Talula Gilbert Bottoms left a memoir from which this information is taken, and was a prodigious quilt maker. Many of her descendants still reside in Fayette County and own several of the quilts. Even though the Bottoms' moved to Alabama, Talula treasured the letters from her sister, Cathern Allen, letting her know of the goings-on at Corinth Church. The church has evolved into a viable congregation of 979 members. The current senior pastor is the Rev. John A. Jenkins, who has been at the church for eight years. The associate pastor is the Rev. Phillips Shepherd, who also serves as the minister of music and education. The Rev. Shepherd was born and reared in Walton County. He graduated from Shorter College in 1985 and for several years worked as a district manager for a finance company. In 1991 he felt the call to serve full time in music ministry and enrolled at Clayton State, beginning college once again. He was concerned for the necessary funds to support the family and continue his education, and felt truly blessed after one quarter at Clayton State, when he was awarded a full Spivey Scholarship, graduating in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts in Voice and Performance. He began on a part-time basis with Corinth Baptist in 1993 and was hired full time in 1994. Global missions is the main thrust of this congregation and they are hosting a conference on this theme in the middle of February. Attendees will be coming from all over the world. The pastors and members of the congregation have visited and witnessed to people in Jamaica, Rumania, Hungary, Austria and at the end of February, six members will be going to India. Witnessing on a local level is important to the church also, and they support a local food pantry, the Fayette Pregnancy Crisis Center and at Christmas they participate in an Angel Christmas Tree, looking after children of families who have a parent in prison. Services are at 11 a.m. Sunday mornings and Sunday School is at 9:45 a.m. and Sunday evening services are at 6 p.m. On Wednesday evenings their is a supper at 5:45 p.m. and worship services are at 6:30 p.m. The church is located at 398 Corinth Road and can be reached at 770-461-4456.
