On Jan. 20,a press release was issued stating that Coach Don Tyre had been released from his responsibilities as head football coach and athletic director at Sandy Creek High School. Coach Tyre had held the position for nine years. While expressing his appreciation for Coach Tyre's contribution to the Sandy Creek program, Dr. Charles Warr, the principal at Sandy Creek, stated that it was necessary to move the program in a new direction for the upcoming school year. Later that afternoon another press release was issued. This one stated that Coach Tyre had resigned. No further information was available at that time. Calls to Coach Tyre and Dr. Warr were not returned. It is not known if Coach Tyre will remain at Sandy Creek for the remainder of the school year. The Sandy Creek Patriots had a season full of heartbreakers in 1998, recording a 2-8 record. Several of their losses came on their opponent's final drives. There was also an unfortunate incident earlier in the season with disciplining a player. Coach Tyre was suspended for 10 days and missed the Patriots win over Eagle's Landing. In his career coaching at Sandy Creek, there have been a number of players that have gone on to Division 1 college football. Most notably, Jabari Holloway, who now plays for Notre Dame. The players and the community appreciate everything Coach Tyre has done for the program. |
