Friday night saw the Fayette County wrestling team take
on Perry High School and Cook County in a duals meet. The
Tigers beat Perry by a score of 46-18 and Cook County by a
score of 60-24. Zach Nelson, a freshman who wrestles at 112 for
the Tigers broke a finger at Perry and was unavailable for the
tournament at Houston County the next day. Fayette County
improved their duals record to 13-3.
The Tigers participated in the Houston County Invitational
on Saturday and won it all, despite being shorthanded.
Jonathan Bailey was sitting out due to injury as was Zach Nelson. The
Tigers had 12 wrestlers wrestling and 11of those 12 placed in
the top four.
They had four champions; Jarrod Bailey (130), TJ
Copeland (152), Brandon Phllips (119) and Landon Anderson (215).
Three Tigers took second place; Brad West (135),Nick Salters (145)
and Matt Carriker(189). Freshman Brett Robinson took third
place at 103 while Chris King, Jonathan Bailey's fill in, took third
place at 160. L.K. Hiltbrand (125) and Craig Barron (171) took
fourth place for Fayette County.
The only wrestler that did not place for the Tigers was
Brian Spaldiero. He was injured in the quarterfinals and Coach
Bailey opted to not let him wrestle and aggravate the injury further.
"It was good for the team to get a look at some middle
georgia wrestlers," said Coach Bailey. "For several of the kids on
our team, this was the first time the placed in a varsity
tournament." Fayette County hosts LaGrange, East Coweta and
Central Carrollton on Wednesday and then hosts the Fayette
County Duals on Saturday. Duluth, Heritage, Jonesboro, Lithia
Springs and Salem will all be making the trip to Fayetteville for the
duals meet. The wrestling action begins at 10 a.m. and promises to be
exciting.
