There are no plans to reopen discussion on a rezoning to allow The Mews shopping area at Ga. Highway 54 and Walt Banks Road at Thursday's Peachtree City Council meeting, says City Manager Jim Basinger.

Mayor Bob Lenox had said earlier that the issue might be revisited because a time crunch curtailed the length of council members' debate on the rezoning. Lenox could not be reached, but Basinger said that "the mayor will be making an announcement about it at the meeting, but at present there are no plans to reopen that discussion."

Developer John Callaway had sought to rezone about 19 acres of residential property east of the intersection, join it with about 33 acres on the northeast corner of the intersection, and build an upscale shopping-dining area with extensive green buffers. Callaway also had offered to make about five acres, across Walt Banks from McIntosh High School, available to the city for a cultural arts center. The council disallowed the rezoning Jan. 7 in a 4-0 vote with Councilman Jim Pace abstaining.

Agenda items for discussion at the Jan. 21 meeting at 7 p.m. include a contract with Peachtree Natural Gas to supply gas to the city and residents; an amendment to the city's heavy truck ordinance, and a public hearing on the city's Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan.

The council also is set to vote on an ordinance that will change its "meeting time adjournment requirement." The council had previously imposed an 11 p.m. cutoff on all discussion and votes at council meetings. The Jan. 7 meeting had one agenda item carried over because of the cutoff time. Council discussion on The Mews question was limited to about 11 minutes, after speakers had debated both sides of the issue for more than two and half hours.
