Petrol prices plunge to lowest level in more than a decade

Fayette motorists travelling this weekend will be paying nearly 15 cents less per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline than they did in December of last year.

The AAA Auto Club South December Fuel Gauge Report shows that the average price for self-serve regular unleaded gasoline decreased 2.5 cents this month to 85.8 cents per gallon from the November price of 88.3 cents per gallon.

"Due to the continued economic crisis in Asia and Russia, and the resulting oversupply of crude oil on the world market, average gasoline prices to their lowest level in over a decade," said Yoli Buss, director of traffic safety. "Georgia motorists will continue to enjoy the gift of lower gas prices throughout the holiday season."

Mid-grade unleaded dropped 2.8 cents to an average 95.8 cents per gallon, while premium fell 2.5 cents to an average $1.06 per gallon.

Locally, Fayette's gas prices continue to be well below average. Regular unleaded has sold for as low as 69.9 cents a gallon this month.
