Fayette County government leaders will discuss the upcoming legislative session and other topics at Fayetteville City Hall next week during the quarterly meeting of the Association of Fayette County Governments. The group, a loose-knit organization that seeks cooperation between local governments, also will elect new officers for 1999 and will hear an update on the progress of the FUTURE Committee during its Jan. 19 meeting at 7 p.m. FUTURE (Fayette United Team to Use Resources Effectively) has been working for more than a year to hammer out agreements designed to reduce the cost of local government through cooperative purchasing and other agreements. A new agreement on procedures for annexation, giving the county government a chance to comment before cities take in property, was arrived at during 1998, but then put on a shelf after a court declared similar agreements unconstitutional. FUTURE also has worked out joint purchasing arrangements, sharing of equipment, and cooperative agreements between police and fire departments.
