School board is right to question expensive Starr's Mill athletic project

Letters from Our Readers

I have read with great interest the articles and letters regarding the building of a stadium complex at the South Complex, particularly the recent letter by Mr. Cary Rogers.

It seems that a few "facts" were left out. For example, this proposed complex would cost $3.1 million to build. That is nearly 2.5 times the estimated cost to duplicate the newest county stadium at Sandy Creek!

This proposed complex would include five additional locker rooms, additional coaches offices, and a second weight training room!

The only other stadium with even a small field house is Fayette County High and that was funded by the boosters about 20 years ago. All this at a time when the school district is unable to fund all basic academic needs.

For example, I am sure that parents of Peachtree City Elementary would like to have a few of those brand new computer desks from the South Complex instead of having to use a fund-raiser to buy them.

I am sure that the students at McIntosh would like some of that latest technology as well those beautiful, irrigated practice fields, and one of those state of the art gymnasiums.

Fayette Middle School could use some of the computer equipment, lab tables, and media center books and I know that many of the schools could use the excellent classrooms, gymnasiums, and auditorium that make this one of the nicest facilities in the state.

But as Mr. Rogers knows, this is about athletics. He apparently isn't interested in the plight of the academic facilities throughout the county. After all, he has his complex, now he wants the best stadium complex money can buy.

Fortunately for us, at least three members of the school board recognize that they represent the entire county and are fiscally responsible to all the taxpayers, and not special interest groups.

Remember the SPLOST, Mr. Rogers? Need I remind you that the voters rejected the SPLOST, notifying the school board that, at that time, they weren't willing to fund the academic needs, let alone your stadium. Perhaps you and your fellow boosters should have been more active in trying to pass the SPLOST.

To blame the school board for listening to the voters is unfair and childish. To use the press to berate them and insult them with half-truths and unfair accusations is disgusting and insulting to the county voters. The school board is acting on our behalf, as per the voters mandate, when they reject your absurd request.

Perhaps you should consider asking for a much scaled-down facility more in line with the other schools instead of "demanding" this extremely costly complex. Maybe you should suggest another SPLOST and see if the voters will back your stadium this time. Maybe you need to just take what you can get under current fiscal capabilities and let the school board work on the rest later. Regardless, you should grow up and start acting like a group of adults instead of whiny spoiled children.

It is time for our county to stop showing up in small "special interest" groups with this "spoiled brat" approach and recognize that the school board represents all county citizens and by making these tough decisions is indeed looking out for the good of all our students and parents.
