Fires damage 2 Fayette homes

A firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation as a result of the first of two major residence fires in Fayette County last weekend.

Capt. Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services said that firefighter/paramedic Mitchell Smith was treated and released at Fayette Community Hospital and is doing well now.

Smith was one of 21 firefighters who fought a blaze at 134 Old Milam Rd. for more than two hours, Nelms said. The fire occurred just before midnight on Jan. 8. Fulton County provided an engine and three personnel for the incident under the two counties' mutual aid agreement, he added.

Occupants of the home escaped without injury, but damages are estimated at around $50,000. The cause of the fire appears to be electrical but is still under investigation, Nelms said.

Firefighters also responded to a home fire at 605 Janice Dr. early Sunday morning, where the residence suffered "heavy damage" estimated at about $140,000. No one was hurt.

Nelms said the home was occupied, but the family was able to get out without harm. The fire took 22 firefighters several hours to contain, he said.

The cause of the Janice Drive fire has not been determined but apparently started in the kitchen area of the home, Nelms said. Neither fire is thought to have been "suspicious" at this time, he added. The department is still investigating two arson fires last fall.
