streak, beat Piedmont
The Clayton State Lady Lakers snapped their four game
losing streak and defeated Piedmont College by a score of
87-84. Sophomore Misty Amerson scored 15 of her 17 points in
the first half as Clayton State shot 53 percent from the floor in the
first half. They led 51-44 at the break. The Lady Lakers extended
their lead to 10 points on the strength of junior Mandy Cowan's 19
point performance. Freshman Courtney Strickland added 10 points
while Shenika Worthy captured eight rebounds for Clayton State.
Piedmont College went on a 13 -2 run with five minutes to
go however and cut the Lady Laker's lead to one point. Cowan
grabbed an offensive rebound and scored giving them a three point lead
for good. Senior Shelly Croft and junior Joya Collier each finished
with 12 points. "This was a great win for us," said interim coach
Jolyn Smith. "We really came out and played with some intensity for
the first time in several games."
Clayton State improved their record to 5-7 and travel to
Augusta State for a Peach Belt Conference game on Wednesday.
The tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. with the mens game scheduled to follow.
