Larry Turner, manager of the Peachtree City Water and
Sewerage Authority, says he is ready to meet with state officials from
the Environmental Protection Division (EPD) about 15 old
barrels on the Flat Creek sewage treatment facility grounds. The
metal drums are supporting aerator bases, Turner said, in a small
area where Georgia Utilities apparently dumped broken or
unnecessary parts and equipment. Turner said there are plans to clean up
the scrap area, but an initial WASA investigation of the barrels
indicated there are no significant problems. The Hazardous
Waste Branch of EPD will evaluate the barrels and any contents, as a
result of contact from Dennis Chase, local biologist who
monitors Fayette water quality, Turner said. WASA will "take whatever
corrective action is necessary" after the evaluation, he added.
