Within the next two weeks, Coweta County's students should be fully hooked up and ready to navigate the information superhighway. School system director of operations Doug Bennett said the system's ambitious project to equip all of the county's classrooms with computers should be completed by Jan. 10. Last week, Bennett traveled to East Coweta Middle School and said all the computers had been installed and were "humming right along." This week, workers are busy un-crating computers and hooking up Internet service at several of the county's other schools and Bennett said work is on track to meet the Jan. 10 deadline. Earlier this fall, the Coweta County Board of Education approved spending $1.1 million to buy 683 Windows computers and 291 Macintosh computers to provide at least one computer in each classroom. The funds are coming from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax that voters approved earlier in the year. "All of our teachers will now be connected to our Wide Area Network and have e-mail and Internet capabilities. By the first of the year, we should have a lot of excited teachers," said Superintendent of Education Richard Brooks. Since the school system bought such a large number of computers at one time, Brooks said the vendors are offering a unique opportunity to any of the system's educators. "Any teacher who wants to purchase a computer at this low price for his or her personal use will be allowed," he said.
