The Fayette County Middle School wrestling team is
looking to build on the success of the 1997-98 season. Coach
Chris Cope started the season in November with 90 wrestlers
signed up. Currently, the team is down to a more manageable 52
wrestlers. Coach Cope indicated the team has potential talent in all of
the weight divisions but suffers from a lack of experience in the
lightweight and the heavyweight classes.
The team is anchored by its middleweights, of which there
are several returning from last year's County Championship
team. They are 3-0 this season, having defeated Landmark
Christian, Stockbridge and Woodward Academy in dual meets. The
team has been led by middleweights Jason Watford, Steven West,
Kyle Rossi, Matt Tedford, Joe Strickland and Miles Bryant.
They each have won all of their matches this season.
Coach Cope believes some of the lightweights will need to
mature quickly and step forward for the team to beat county rival
Rising Starr this Friday night. If the lightweights improve with
experience as expected and the middleweights can continue to hold
their present edge, the team should be a favorite to repeat as county
champions.
