Calling young authors

The Young Georgia Authors' Writing Competition is now under way. For the first time the competition will feature separate winners in all grades, kindergarten through twelfth.

Students in participating schools may submit essays, stories or poems to be judged on criteria such as imagination, originality and correctness. Winning entries from individual schools advance to competition in their school system, and system winners then compete at the state level. Thirteen state winners will be recognized at the June 1999 regular monthly meeting of the State Board of Education in Atlanta.

This year, system-winning entries must be submitted to the Georgia Department of Education by March 15, 1999. District and state winners will be announced by May.

Teachers are asked to work through their curriculum directors or language arts coordinators, who have detailed instructions and rules for the 1998-99 Young Georgia Authors' Writing Competition. Please do not submit entries directly to the GDOE.
