FCHS student designs winning T-shirt

Erin Dutton, a senior art student at Fayette County High School, is the recipient of an award from Fayette Youth Protection Home for the new design for its 1999 Power Parade T-shirt.

The theme for the 10th annual fund-raising event was contributed by the Flat Rock Middle School Beta Club: "The 10th Annual Fayette Youth Protection Home Power Parade...A Decade of Power!" The design will be seen on hundreds of T-shirts given to Fayette elementary school children who raise money in the power walk, set for the week of April 19.

Dutton's design was chosen from 55 entries submitted by art classes of Fayette High, Starr's Mill High and McIntosh High. "Erin's design was chosen for its depiction of the theme and its quality. All of the work was done by hand," commented Youth Protection board member Ernestine Roberts, who was a member of the panel of judges. Brandon Michael Dillard, also from FCHS, was runner-up.

Erin and Brandon were awarded gift certificates for their efforts Dec. 16 at Fayette County High School.

"We were thrilled with the interest that the high schools and middle schools have taken in this event," commented Jane Gough, spokesperson for Fayette Youth Protection Home. "The Power Parade has become a tradition in the elementary schools for many years, but it is great that in our 10th year, the older students have joined us," she said. The Power Parade is scheduled each year to coincide with Child Abuse Awareness month.

Fayette Youth Protection Home, Inc. is the non-profit corporation which owns the Asden Johnson Home and the Jim Friday Home, which are group homes for abused and neglected children. The Friday Home, in northern Fayette County, has been operating at or near capacity since 1989. The Johnson Home, in Brooks, opened in August of 1998 and is also at capacity. The combined facilities house 16 children for extended care with four additional beds for emergency placement.
