Postage rates to increase Jan. 10
for Nonautomation Single Piece Weight Not Over (Ounces)

By CAROLYN CARY

Contributing Writer

Jan. 10 is the date when the United States Postal Service will require one additional cent for its first class postage on a one ounce letter.

The "H" stamp, having a domestic value of 33 cents, is now available. It depicts Uncle Sam's hat with red stripes and a blue band around it with white stars. This follows the tradition that began a number of years ago when the first stamp was issued without a denomination on it and was called the "A" stamp. It was temporarily used until stamps with the denomination could be printed.

The "temporary" stamps can be used for domestic mailing only and cannot be used on letters going out of the country.

Ounces.......Rate
...1.........$0.33
...2.........$0.55
...3.........$0.77
...4.........$0.99
...5.........$1.21
...6.........$1.43
...7.........$1.65
...8.........$1.87
...9.........$2.09
..10.........$2.31

No time frame has been set for the issuance of a stamp that actually has 33 cents printed on it.

In the meantime, you may want to buy
one-cent stamps to go with the 32 cents stamps you have left on Jan. 10.
