Father David Epps was installed Dec. 6 as Canon Missioner of Law Enforcement and State Guard Chaplaincy for the Diocese of the Armed Forces.

He will represent The Right Rev. Douglas Woodall, bishop of the Missionary Diocese of South Carolina and bishop of the Diocese of the Armed Forces, with permission and agreement of The Right Rev. John W. Holloway, bishop of the Diocese of Georgia. As canon missioner, Epps will represent the bishop to those who are seeking information and guidance regarding entering law enforcement chaplaincy or State Guard chaplaincy ministry, and will be responsible for training and for certification programs.

Epps, who has been a police chaplain for nearly 10 years, currently serves as chief of chaplains for the Peachtree City Police Department, as chaplain for the Fayette County Sheriffís Department, and as chaplain for the Fulton County police academy. He has also served as chaplain for the Atlanta division of the FBI. He serves as a chaplain, with the rank of captain, with the Georgia Defense Force, an auxiliary of the Georgia National Guard. Father Epps has been in the ministry 27 years and is the founding pastor of the two-year-old Christ the King Church, Charismatic Episcopal.

He is a graduate of the Peachtree City Citizen's Police Academy, the FBI Chaplain's Academy, and graduated as valedictorian from the Fulton County Police Academy. Epps has received nearly 800 hours of training in police subjects from the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council since 1992. He is a certified Basic Law Enforcement Officer, a certified police instructor, and a certified defense tactics instructor. He is also a Georgia POST certified chaplain, a senior certified chaplain with the International Conference of Police Chaplains, and has received a certificate in Advanced Pastoral Studies in Police Chaplaincy from the Academy of Parish Clergy.

In 1993, Father Epps was named volunteer of the year for the Peachtree City Police Department. He currently serves as a member of the Bishop's Council for the Georgia Diocese. The designation of canon missioner carries with it an appointment to the CEC's Commission on Chaplains.
