Fayetteville police broke up a gathering of Fayette County High School students who apparently planned a fight at the Greenway Amoco Station on Ga. Highway 85 Wednesday afternoon.

Capt. Harold Simmons said that the investigation is still open, but it appeared that a large number of students, male and female, had gathered into two groups on the Greenway parking lot near the intersection with Hood Avenue.

"The owner was afraid for the safety of his customers, and called the police," Simmons said. He said the owner "did not want the students to loiter on his property" and added that "verbal criminal trespass warnings" were given to the students. Simmons said the warning means that if the students are on the property again "and they are not there to conduct business, they can be arrested, and they will be."

Simmons said there was no initial evidence that "gangs" were involved, and the cause of the disturbance is still under investigation. He said the police have notified FCHS of the names of 41 students, ages 15 to 17, whose "names were taken when they received the warnings."
