'The Lighting of Wellington' Annual tradition is this weekend

The annual "Lighting of Wellington" will take place this Saturday and Sunday from 6:30 to 10 p.m. both nights. Santa arrives at 7 p.m. Saturday to ride through the subdivision, located at the intersection of Banks Road and Ga. Highway 54 East, passing out candy to children and stopping in each cul-de-sac to listen to their Christmas wish lists.

The Wellington Place Home Owners Association has sponsored the event, which features more than 900 luminaries lighting the streets, since 1985. In another yearly tradition, the group also sponsors two needy families in the area for Christmas.

"We encourage other groups and neighborhood organizations to join us in adopting a family," said association president Jim Winkler. For more information, call the Fayette County Department of Family and Children Services at 770-460-2555.

The association encourages families in the subdivision to use white lights to decorate their homes and yards and a Yard of the Season will be chosen in the subdivision, marked by a Wellington Candy Cane in the yard.

"This is the highlight of our Christmas season," Winkler said. "We only ask that people be extremely careful while driving through to avoid accidents."
