At least four home burglaries may be solved with the arrest of an 18-year-old who apparently was living out of his car, according to Lt. Mahlon Donald of the Criminal Investigations Division of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.

Donald said that Keith Britton Smith, 18, was arrested Dec. 12 on Tyrone Road after the department had posted a "lookout" on a vehicle matching the description of the one Smith was driving. Two uniformed officers spotted items in the back seat of his car which immediately implicated the suspect in a just-reported Tyrone Road break-in, Donald said.

Donald said that Smith has been charged with four counts of burglary for thefts from homes on Buckeye Road, Flat Creek Trail and Henderson Road, in addition to Tyrone Road, within the last two weeks. Items taken in the burglaries included television sets, VCRs, compact discs, various types of stereo equipment and a cordless phone.

Smith's last known address was on Wagon Wheel Way in Peachtree City, Donald said. The suspect also is being questioned by Fayetteville Police in connection with burglaries in the city limits, Donald added.

Computer hacking

Another FCSD report shows that George Daniel Myers of Jaysee Court reported that his computer had been illegally invaded and personal information compromised.

Lt. Donald said that investigators' information so far shows that hackers are apparently able to "enter" personal computers "during the download time" for certain Internet information. Georgia Code 16.9.93 provides penalties for violations of computer privacy, he added, but such cases are "hard to track down since it can happen from anywhere in the country," he added.
