I would like to comment on a recent proposal by the Coweta County Board of Education's Building and Grounds Committee. The committee has proposed naming the football fields at Northgate High School after retired physical education director Henry Seldon. Committee chairman Harry Mullins made the recommendation. Mullins stated that Seldon has "given to his community through time and energy and through his life" adding that "I can't think of anybody more deserving than Henry Seldon." Unlike Mullins, I do not know Seldon, so I asked some longtime school system employees about him. When I did, I heard nothing but glowing praises. Everyone seemed to agree that he is a fine man and a fine educator. Naming a school facility after him is an excellent idea. However, I believe that there is a much more appropriate facility than Northgate's football fields. For literally decades, Seldon has been associated with Central in Newnan. To name a school facility after him is quite appropriate, but to name the football fields at a small high school in the northern end of the county, a school with which Seldon has never been associated, after him is not appropriate. It would be roughly equivalent to naming the Max Bass Athletic Complex at Newnan High School after East Coweta's Danny Cronic. I suggest if the board truly wants to honor Seldon that they should name our soon-to-be built vocational high school after him. Henry Seldon High School sounds much better than the Central Educational Center. The board can then someday name the football fields at Northgate after Northgate's own Henry Seldon or Max Bass, whoever that individual may be. Peter Skrmetti
