Peachtree City's decision to work for lower natural gas rates for the city and residents attracted other Fayette governments to the bandwagon, according to city manager Jim Basinger. The effort to negotiate favorable rates with a natural gas provider, in the wake of deregulation, now has become a project of the Fayette County Collaborative Purchasing Committee. Basinger said "that's our H.B. 489 committee" mandated by the legislature to explore ways of sharing services between counties and municipalities. Fayette County, the Fayette County Board of Education, Fayetteville and Tyrone are among entities which will take a look at what negotiations can offer, he added. The committee will accept proposals until Dec. 21 to try for "the most favorable natural gas rates for the governmental entities and the residents," Basinger said. Whether the effort succeeds or not, he said, resident participation is voluntary and any one of the 19 certified providers may be chosen by individual homeowners. But Peachtree City still is encouraging residents who have not chosen a provider to hold off until the results of the rate negotiations are in, Basinger noted.
